The New “Like” Button: Google +1

Hey Hubzers,

Websites across the Internet have been utilizing Facebook’s “Like” button to help spread the word about their content. We’re no stranger to the application, in fact there’s a “Like” option to the left of this entry that, with one click, will share a link to this post on your Facebook wall. Sharing content has never been easier and while “+1” certainly doesn’t introduce something revolutionary, it does have the potential to set a new bar in search engine optimization.

Since March 30th Google began implementing +1 for anyone (with a Google profile) interested in experimenting with Google’s response to the “Like” button. Anyone who opts in to the experiment will begin to see a +1 button next to each link searched in Google, and have the option of engaging or not. Here’s a look:

Like the “Like” button, when the +1 button is clicked (it is in the screenshot) you’re endorsing the link and as of that point anyone who’s a part of your social connections (gmail contacts, Google reader, Google buzz, or Twitter) will be able to see your +1 as they search.
Google says, “The +1’s may appear to anyone who sees the pages marked. However, we’ll try to display your +1’s to people (specifically those in your social connections) who would find them most useful.” Google also offers customized privacy options for your +1’s, like opting out of seeing +1 recommendations on third-party websites and the ability to remove individual recommendations.

(When they’re winning you’re a fan, when they’re 2-7 it’s only a recommendation.)

If +1 catches on like the “Like” button we’re sure to see faster and more relevant results when we search. Will you guys be using +1? For more information about Google +1 check out the video below.
