YouTube account suspended!! Is yours next?
Hey hubzers,
So it seems that YouTube (owned by Google) is on the war path with Internet marketers. Our account (hubze1) that housed over 250 free training videos was suspended today with no warning, and no indication on how we could even fix what was wrong. They did send me an email as you can see from the screenshot below:
It almost appears as if they are saying it is because we used the word YouTube in the title, and I contacted them to see if this was true, and what we could do to get our account back in order, but there has been no response. I searched Twitter today and this seems to be happening to a lot of people.
Our account was in perfect standing, and even had all limitations removed as to how long our videos could be etc. We made sure that we only uploaded 100% original content. All of our videos were basically training videos on using social media. In my opinion, we did not even fall under the Internet Marketing umbrella, even though I am technically in Internet Marketer.
So here is our issue. We teach social media. Would it now be wrong for us to teach our members to use YouTube as one of the main social sites to use when making online video? Because I would hate to see someone else create hundreds of videos to just see them all taken down without even so much as a warning…
I am going to keep you posted, but for now we are moving to Vimeo until we can figure this out. We are using Easy Video Player for all of our paid videos, and those are hosted on the Amazon S3 server and is very inexpensive and works great. If you would like to learn more about Easy Video Player and how you can protect yourself from losing all of your videos, CLICK HERE. This is how I know we were not in any violation, because any “commercial” video we have used Easy Video Player.
Make sure you share this so that people you know do not get their accounts suspended!!!
What do you think about this? Has your account been suspended?
UPDATE 6.15.2011 7:10 AM EST: So it has now been 24 hours and no word from YouTube on what is going to happen with our account. I am going to make a video and post it on our other YouTube account (one that I am not worried of losing) and will see if we can make it go a little viral. I need your help, so please watch for the video and be sure to comment on it so we can get it some attention. This same thing happened to a fellow blogger who literally is the biggest online, and here is a post he did. I love the way he talks to them. Here is a link to his post: Dear YouTube. You broke my heart. Read it.
UPDATE 6.16.2011 11:54 AM EST: YouTube reactivated our account today. However the video in question has been removed. It seems as though you cannot use the word YouTube in the title, even though if you do a search on that keyword there are many. Noy sure what flagged that, but after contacting them, we seem to have it worked out, even though we never got a response. That being said, we are still going to move forward with Vimeo for hubze.TV because I do not want to chance losing all of our hard work again like that. Even though that is where we have the most subscribers, I am now skeptical of the whole thing.
What do you think? Think we should stay at YouTube, or move on? What would YOU do?

I have been a social media marketer going on 3 years. I have been an Internet marketer for over 14. I was a spammer back when that meant entrepreneur. I have always worked hard for what I have and never went to college. I did however tour some colleges just out of high school playing music, so I guess I lived the life without the large loans. I never liked working for other people. I always knew that someone else was making a fortune from my hard labor; I built houses and then sold cars. I do what I love and love what I do! Oh and I love my wife, kids and dogs. Kitty...you're OK I guess...

I Defenitely think you should move over to Vimeo. When companies get too big and dominate, they tend to get way too arrogant and stop taking the people that are responsible for their succes in consideration. Youtube is great, but with what you're saying .... and not even replying is really bad. Some people are now reliant on Youtube for tutorials etc and when that is gone, they need to scramble and find an alternative.
Amazing how big companies also think they can't be replaced and will last forever.
Anyway just my two cents.
That is the problem with any entity getting too big a market share and too big for equitable TOS interpretation and enforcement.
So Glad to hear you guys are back and running. That is so strange to hear about the YouTube word violation. Cant have YouTube in a title of a video. Hmmm. That confuses me and makes me somewhat nervous as well.
In regard to your hubze.tv. Good question. Most of your subs are at YouTube. I would say, 2 things. Could you move your subs to Vimeo? Give them notice that you are moving platforms? Or keep your videos in YouTube but also syndicate them on Vimeo as well just to bullet proof the situation. But of course where do you do most of your video interaction? If it is on youtube then it is good to keep up with the community. It is all a gamble though with all Social Media sites. If you find that there is a proper ROI on the Hubze.tv as it applies to YouTube, then i suppose, keep that going. with maybe always knowing the risk and trying to control as many variables as possible(back up on Vimeo) . Hope this helps.

This is ridiculous. Your company is not what i would call involved in the hard core Internet Marketing field where long sales copy and multiple upsells is the name of the game. So i find it strange if that is who they are trying to send a message too.
Interesting to note many IM'ers have been losing their paypal accounts over the last week or so as well!
Hi David, I did have this happen to me last year. In fact with little warning and no reaction from YT. I actually wrote about it here. http://caseyzemanonline.com/2010/08/how-i-coped-with-my-youtube-channel-being-hacked/
So i assumed I was hacked but looking at the data that has come around as of late. It might have been simply that they were tutorial videos. Some of them even focused on YouTube Training. This is really crazy and my goal is to get to speak to someone at YT about these issues.
David, you are definitely not alone in the YouTube Banning campaign. Well known SEO Legend, David Jenyns had his account terminated too. I did see that he was able to be reinstated this morning after a day long "Open Letter" blogging campaign. http://www.davidjenyns.com/youtube-update
Overall, this is really scary in terms of your business. The TOS and Community Guidelines are too vague as to what constitutes a violation. I think youtube is heading for a lawsuit. We just need to find someone with deep pockets to finance the fight for better publisher terms and a formalized process for remediation and dispute resolution.
Wow! That is unreal. Maybe they should start taking down the channels with the girls shakin it, posted to generate page views for their ads, instead of small businesses trying to earn an honest living and teach other people how to as well. We are trying to start up this economy that will only make it tougher on the small business like Hubze. Waste of time having to up load all those vids to Vimeo and to be down for that amount of time, others do not have access to the training video. Just slows the process of the economy and small business coming back to life..What a shame.. mj
Well we've seen an update from someone that talked with Google and they are saying the closed a bunch of popular accounts to avoid them being hacked. And then reinstated them.. Not sure how true that is. But at least it's back.. But we learned not to depend on it.
I get why site like Facebook and YouTube shut you down when you use their brand in your content. If you read the TOS then you got your warning. If you don't read the TOS on a site before you post content then it certainly "feels" like they are being unfair in shutting you down. It's about protecting their brand that happens to be worth $billions. They can't allow others to use their brand. Period... without exception or they set a precedence that can come back to bite them later.
Simply use general terms and other keywords to describe your content and avoid any mention of a specific brand so that you stay in compliance. The downside is that this waters down the marketing message. Sorry it happened to you. Hope you have your videos saved somewhere so you can rename and reload them.
We keep ALL videos. And it is what can happen when you leave your content in other people's hands...
NO, they only assume it's someone elses, but they don't prove it. It's all bullshit. I had 650 videos that I made, karaoke videos, (instrumentals and added lyrics) and still they say I don't own it? THEY ARE DICKS THAT ARE OUT TO MAKE OUR LIVES MISERABLE!!!
Thanks Kimberly!
This is exactly why I love what I help businesses, internet marketers, and solo professionals with. Thanks for sharing your story out loud!
Congrats on getting back up! How did you contact them to make your appeal? We had the exact same thing happen to us, but no way to plead our case. It feels pretty helpless (which I'm sure you felt). All we do is interview adult industry people and post those interviews on our blog and on youtube. For the record there's no nudity, hate speech, sex... it's more industry interviews to educate those curious or people already in it to improve their careers.
You can check out our open letter to YouTube here: http://elmaveshow.com/youtube-terminates-our-account-hates-sex-and-hates-freedom/
Exactly..
Vimeo's T+ C forbids commercial use except for production companies, people hosting showreels and the like.
You might be ok with your tutorials but if you are doing staightforward marketing or using it as a way to host your business videos you can get shut down there too.
why not post in more than one place? As the saying goes, don't put all your eggs in one basket. You will always be at the mercy of other companies even those whom you highly recommend. They may be here one day and then gone the next. You then loose all your content again.
We just started using EVP to host videos for our paid services. Everything else on our account was/is just how to do social media and how to use our platform so free content. And we didn't feel the need to pay for that hosting without in turn charging people to view it to offset the costs...
Yeah Vimeo videos show up, but not as well as YT in the searches. But that also depends on how much time you spend on the description and etc.
Glad to hear you have your account back. Mine was 87 videos, mostly free computer help type videos. 1.5 million views, 1305 subscribers. Lots of "thank you's" and comments where I provided support for people having trouble with their PC.
I blogged about my problem here:
http://freecomputerconsultant.com/blog/r-i-p-youtube/
Would love for people to give me some support to get mine back.
thanks,

How long ago did you lose your account?

That sucks david.Personally, I wouldn't have only uploaded those important training videos to Youtube. If you have Easy Video Player and Amazon S3, then why wouldn't you have back them on on there? I've heard of this happening to marketers over a year ago, and never wanted to risk losing everything. It's unfortunate that they can just get away with deleting accounts like that. Lame.
Stay with you tube for the SEO value.. Does Vimeo get found/ rank as well as YouTube?
I am an internet marketer as well, and I sell an internet marketing suite, comf5. What you experienced happens frequently and will only increase now that Google is in the driver's seat! What we do and suggest to our clients is to have your own broadcast page (comes as part of the comf5 emarket engine suite). Not sure if other tools offer this or not. But the advantage is obvious; 1) you do not have to compete with other content (related or not) and 2) you don't have to worry about some body getting a wild hair and removing your content or taking away your platform.
Correct. I have no admin rights to my Youtube account. And Youtube says in order to appeal, you have to click acknowledge - which I refuse to do. Someone on the forum told me that the acknowledge button is just "to say that you received the notice" - well of course I did, it's in bold letters. But my violation was against Community Guidelines, but they wouldn't specifically say which one.
Well, in reading these "guidelines" they are so vague that it is hard to even know what our video even did wrong. And of course they give you no explanation other than it was in violation.
Hey Casey, that is a shame that you lost your account. Youtube and Google are becoming too big for their britches. Have you ever heard of Easy Video Producer? It is set up similar to youtube only better because you don't have all the links that can take people away from your video. There are already thousands of members on there also. It is owned by Joel Therien of GVO. Fantastic site and works great. Keep up the good work Casy. I love all your videos and have been on your mailing list for a while. I think it is terrible what youtube can do for no reason at all. Tony Goff http://bit.ly/VideoSolutions
be careful with Paypal as well they are shutting down accounts. Any money you make from the Easy Player affiliate URL move it to your Bank fast!
Aweber too is cracking down.
We now host our own email platform, and never used aWeber anyway because they seemed to be priced too high when we were first getting started.
That sucks about the PayPal accounts too. We fought with them before because they placed a 20% / 90 day rolling reserve on our account because they said the category our business was in, which there is no actual category for us, was an automatic high risk category...I mean it is as if these categories were written in the early 90's. These things need to be updated, because in my opinion we are not high risk having less than 15 refund with over 8600 customers. I'd say that's freaking awesome!
My problem was more false flagging than Youtube turning me off due to keywords. Once you acknowledge the flag, then they're terminating accounts. But if you leave it there - your videos will still play.
You just can't post any new videos can you Devon? And you couldn't get it resolved until you admitted you violated the TOS - but they wouldn't tell you how you violated the TOS so you could defend yourself. Am I remembering that correctly?
David - do you have the video in question posted anywhere else? I'd like to take a look at it to see if there's sense to be made from this.
I was not able to access any of the videos after this had happened. They are all back online now except for the video that was titled "iFrameEngine YouTube Module." This video has indeed been removed. Thanks for the post however.
This is the infamous video Jeff: http://vimeo.com/25152017
You're given 3 warnings before your account is terminated so you either didn't get the other warnings or something weird is going on here. That message that you included in this post is only the first warning (all 3 are written differently).
Josh this was the only email we received and almost at the same time the account was suspended. I happened to notice it while checking a video to make sure it was working. We are discovering that many marketers in our niche have there accounts recently and it sounds like someone has created a program to auto flag accounts with different IP addresses.
If that is the case it's sad that YouTube gives validity to users flagging other users to the extent an account gets suspended.. I can see a warning or removal of a video, but deleting the whole account is ridiculous. And now our videos still show in the search just no video there.
Yeah this is how it happened to me josh. Not sure why.
Josh...this is the ONLY warning we received. We then got a second message that I replied to the following day...and after my response...today our account is back online. Not sure what happened, but I guess they saw our videos were not at all a violation.
Hi David, This very thing happened to me last year. I had about 100 videos hosted on YT and then without warning my entire account was suspended. Now right before this happened , I was asked to join the partnership program. When i went through that process, the very next day after going through the questions and linking up my adsense, they closed my account. i thought this was due to a hacking, because all of my videos were original content. Tutorial based, but original. I wrote about it here. http://caseyzemanonline.com/2010/08/how-i-coped-with-my-youtube-channel-being-hacked/ . Not sure what is going on with YT but I am going to get to the bottom of it. MY most recent channel that I had to create again, so far (although i havent been on this morning) is still intact. I use amazon s3 on my site and now just use YT for content distribution. Scary stuff. I am putting together some things that might be able to protect an internet marketers account. ON mine, i have some other videos besides just tutorials maybe that is what is helping me now. The other thing is YT can tell when you are using automation software or buying views. That can have a huge effect. Or if you are sending out too many emails at one time. Let's talk more about it David. Cheers, Casey

Sheesh! Kinda scary to see this sorta thing still happening. James is right. The S3 Cloud removes this exposure. The ROI is apparent, so I was glad to see this one above.

Also, I have refused every request (every time I logged in) to turn on ads for our videos. I do not want our members or viewers to have to see an ad every time they want to watch one of our videos. Maybe that is why. That is what my wife said as well. Who knows. All I know is it is a bunch of dictator type crap, and we are not going to play ball!
Thanks Tara...and just so you know your blog post is not quite accurate...it was YouTube who suspended our account not Facebook and it was one video they said. Just FYI. And you are welcome to use that domain name until we are a billion dollar company! LOL

Those fucking assholes took down both my accounts saying that some of my videos had some copyright infringement, WHICH IS NOT TRUE!!!
I WANT MONEY FOR INSTRUMENTALS I PAID FOR FAIR AND SQUARE!!! NO NOTICE, JUST AN EMAIL SAYING SORRY!!! FUCK YOU YOUTUBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
