Hate The New Facebook Newsfeed?

“>Since about 1am CDT when Facebook started rolling out the complaining and whining about the changes to the newsfeed and the addition of the Ticker began.

People have started pages about how they hated it and want it back like it was, and created images like the one on this blog about how much they hate it.

Your newsfeed right now is likely full of people pitching a fit about it.

But why? Why do people take changes to a website so personal?

I just don’t get it…

It’s JUST a website afterall. It’s not like the government told you that you can no longer drink water on Tuesdays or something.. They just made some changes to the newsfeed to make it easier to see everything. And added a Ticker to make it so you can hop into conversations with your friends faster (ala Twitter).

What’s the big deal?

It seems like people want to immediately start complaining without taking 2 minutes to poke around and figure it out. And once you do you can see that it’s not that much different than before. (We mentioned these changes yesterday as well.)

In fact it’s much easier than before. Why do I think that? Let me try to explain below:

  1. No more Top News and Most Recent. Until today the default for all users was Top News. Meaning EVERYTHING in your newsfeed was shown to you as determined by Facebook’s Edgerank score. So in most cases you weren’t likely seeing posts from your friends and pages you followed. I would bet most people never realized that and never switched to Most Recent.
  2. Now you have “Top Stories” instead. Basically what this means is if you are a way from Facebook for a bit of time and then log back in you will see some posts labeled “Top Stories”. These are items from people you are friends with or pages you Like or people you subscribe to. They will show up in the Top Stories if it’s had alot of comments and likes. So what Facebook is doing is trying to make sure you don’t miss a hot or popular story. Then if you aren’t interested in seeing that story you can remove from Top stories by hitting the arrow on the right of the post.
  3. Recent Stories. This is basically what the old “Most Recent” was. Except now you don’t have to choose. Now you are FINALLY seeing every post from every person and page, at least according to Facebook. Time will tell if Recent Stories is in fact a real time lists of posts.
  4. Ticker. I’m digging the Ticker.. Basically it is showing you activity from your friends and pages you follow LIVE. The newsfeed is semi-live but this is truly live. If you have a ton of friends or subscribe to alot of people and pages this could be hard to keep up with. But you can see where your friends are leaving comments around FB and choose to get into the conversation with them. And you don’t have to leave where you are. Just hover your mouse over it and boom it loads in a window and you can leave your comment and go about your business.. I think this will make things even more social than before!! Look out Twitter!!!

There were other changes to lists we mentioned the other day as well.

Overall I love the changes and can’t understand why people take it so personally when a website decides to upgrade. These same people would likely gripe if Facebook didn’t change so there is no way Facebook can win with these people. If you haven’t weighed in feel free to leave  your comment on our Facebook page.

My theory is if you don’t like the site don’t use it! Plain and simple. Just like TV shows, radio, stores and etc no one is forcing you to be on Facebook. So stop griping about it!

It’s a free site and until you start paying a monthly fee get over yourself! (and yes I know some tech nerds want to say we are paying with our information and IP addresses and by clicking on ads.. BLAH… Who cares about that stuff? Only a few over paranoid techies… These same people probably are too paranoid to leave their house after sunset too.. )

The griping isn’t over either.. Facebook will be announcing other big changes tomorrow at the F8 Conference. Some of them I am not too fond of, but again we’ll adapt and move on..

So stop complaining and go back to playing Farmville!!!
