British Tourists Deoprted for Tweeting
(hubze) A little while ago I posted about Homeland Security watching activity on social media.
Twitter and Facebook are by nature hotspots for opinions ranging from the radical to the mundane.
You can decide where the following tweets fall in the spectrum.
Two young Brits were detained and deported for tweeting.
Apparently the two were flagged by Homeland Security before they even arrived in the States. A week before their trip, the following message was tweeted: “free this week for a quick gossip/prep before I go and destroy America? x“
According to tweeter Leigh Van Bryan, 26, the phrase “destroy America” actually means to get wild, crazy, and trashed.
Another tweet was a quote from the television show ‘Family Guy’: “3 weeks today, we’re totally in LA p***** people off on Hollywood Blvd and diggin’ Marilyn Monroe up!”
I guess the language barrier between generations is greater than I anticipated, seeing as the two were placed on a “One Day Look Out” list that flagged the above tweets on Bryan’s “Tweeter” account (the paperwork’s misspelling, not mine…you can check-out the documents here).
Bryan and his travel-mate, 24-year-old Emily Bunting, had a welcome party of stern officials waiting for them when they got off the plane. The two were detained at customs.
The next 12 hours were spent in the company of Homeland Security officials who grilled the pair on their plans for mass (self)destruction.
Bunting, was asked by officials if she “was going to be Leigh’s lookout while he dug up Marilyn Monroe.” Apparently their suitcases were searched for spades and shovels.
According to the Huffington Post, “Bryan was charged with intending to come to the U.S. to commit crimes, while Bunting was charged for traveling with him.”
Comment and let us know what you think about this misunderstanding, and remember to be careful what you tweet!

Absolute rubbish! Can they not put the tweets into context, 12 hours interrogation for tweeting is ridiculous. The 'officials' must have far too much time of their hands.
